Perth Airport’s Louvre Units enhance recycling whilst supporting cancer care

Recycling Bins with Container exchangePerth Airport recently completed a project installing custom Louvre Units to support the rollout of Containers for Change (WARRRL) and improve resource recovery outcomes across the precinct.

Airports present a challenging environment for recycling, with high volumes of transient users and limited time for decision-making when recycling. In these settings, intuitive design and durable, well-finished infrastructure are critical to limiting contamination and achieving consistent outcomes.

This project followed a successful multi-year trial in Terminal 4, where over 660,000 containers were diverted from landfill. The broader rollout required a standardised system that could be applied airport-wide while maintaining that level of performance at scale.

The units were designed in partnership with Source Separation Systems’ Design and Waste Experts and the Airport Sustainability team. This units were then manufactured by Glen and our talented team in Newcastle.

Custom top plates were developed to ensure clear stream separation and minimise ambiguity at the point of disposal, allowing passengers, staff and visitors to participate correctly without guidance. Each station incorporates a Containers for Change (WARRRL) stream — with the 10c refund supporting Breast Cancer Care WA — alongside landfill streams and in some instances an Organics stream.

The units were manufactured in commercial-grade melamine, with additional durability features such as stainless-steel kick plates. In high-visibility areas including the food court, units were further enhanced with stone surrounds and stainless steel inlays to align with the airport’s existing finishes and overall aesthetic.

The program has been described by Perth Airport as a “win-win” for both sustainability and community impact, and forms part of their broader strategy to achieve a 75% resource recovery target by 2030.
